Facebook down for second time in a week

Facebook was inaccessible for some users on Monday afternoon, its second outage in less than a week. Facebook’s map on downdetector.com, which monitors disruptions, showed major outages over parts of North America and elsewhere. The social network’s mobile app appeared to be down as well, but Messenger services seem to be working. A message displayed on facebook.com said: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.

  • The company’s shares were down nearly 4% at $89.25 (£58.83) in afternoon trading
  • Facebook suffered a similar outage last Thursday when it was down in North America, Europe, Australia and India.
My opinion on this news story is the fact that due to audiences being so tuned into social media, they almost have media controls their life. As due to audiences complaining about the downfall of Facebook, it shows how dependant they are on social media, and therefore how social media has changed the way people now behave as well as react to things like social media having issues and not working.

Buzzfeed moves into local news by hiring new regional reporters

Buzzfeed is looking to take on local and regional papers at their own game, by recruiting more regional reporters to cover the north of England, Scotland and Wales. The ever-growing news and entertainment site is in the process of hiring 14 new staff members, including four reporters who will cover regional beats. This will see Buzzfeed's news team in the UK increase by around half, growing to 40 people. Although these reporters will cover wide regions, and won't have the advantage of large teams or detailed local knowledge that local papers have, the news will still worry the beleaguered publishers of local and regional titles.

  • The BBC made similar move recently, announcing that they would fund 100 local journalists In

  • August, NBC Universal invested $200 million in Buzzfeed - bringing the total value of the company to around $1.5 billion.

Audience and Institution

What are the key statistics relating to the influence of new and digital media?
  • The majority of adults in the UK (95%) say they follow the news.
  • Television is by far the most-used platform for news, with 75% of UK adults saying they use TV as a source of news; this figure has seen a small decrease since 2013 (78%).
  • There has been growth in the number of those who use any internet or apps for news, with over four in ten (41%) doing this so this year, compared to just under a third last year (32%).
  • This is particularly evident in the 16-34 age group, where use of internet or apps for news has increased from 44% in 2013 to 60% in 2014. This is particularly evident in the 16-34 age group,
  • over a quarter (28%) of those who consume news in the UK named BBC One, compared to over one-third (34%) in 2013.

Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.

BBC News

News has become 24 hours a day; immediate; available on new platforms; mobile. And now the latest powerful tool to change news - social media. For BBC News, social media currently has three key, highly valuable roles in our journalism:

• news gathering - it helps us gather more, and sometimes better, material; we can find a wider ranges of voices, ideas and eyewitnesses quickly
• audience engagement - how we listen to and talk to our audiences, and allowing us to speak to different audiences - and
• a platform for our content - it's a way of us getting our journalism out there, in short form or as a tool to take people to our journalism on the website, TV or radio. It allows us to engage different and younger audiences.

Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point

The Huffington Post became one of the most popular news sites online largely by rewriting newspaper articles. This isn't the inevitable result of technology. Traditionally, the companies that invested in music and film also controlled their distribution – EMI, for example, owned recording studios, pressing plants, and the infrastructure that delivered CDs to stores. Piracy was always a nuisance, but never a serious threat. The same was true of other media businesses: the easiest place to get a newspaper story was from a newspaper. The internet changed all this, not because it enables the fast transmission of digital data but because the regulations that enable technology companies to evade responsibility for their business models have created a broken market.
  • The Pirate Bay website made money by illegally offering major-label albums, even as music sales declined to less than half of what they were 10 years ago.
  •  YouTube used clips from shows such as NBC's Saturday Night Live to build a business that Google bought for $1.65bn.#

Who has benefited most from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?

Due to the changes in new and digital media, it was inevitable to state that audiences has benefited the most on the news industry, however so have institutions in some aspects. Audiences has benefited the most due to the changes in new and digital media as its more accessible due to applications on mobiles and news that is now easier to access in terms of online newspapers or social media such as twitter. However, this is then a downfall for institutions as due to the changes in how news is now consumed it causes a decline of the industry, causing people to lose their jobs as well as newspaper closures.

'There has been growth in the number of those who use any internet or apps for news, with over four in ten (41%) doing this so this year, compared to just under a third last year (32%) ; this statistic shows how audiences have tuned into news channels due to the accessibility on their mobile phones. these statistics also explain what audiences are more likely to consume these applications; such as the youth which makes them broader. Also due to social media becoming more advanced than it was before, it has also caused the audiences to have an alternative ideology as they can share their comments and thoughts; which therefore gives them more of a say as they are getting their voices heard. Also due to social media, it also allows audiences to receive live updates which therefore mean that they are better informed due to the instant updates they receive from social media such as twitter.

However; even though it advantages the audience it is disadvantaging the institutions at the same time. This is because due to the free news audiences are now available to, it leads to the decline of the industry as there are many job losses due to this as well as newspaper closures. Also, even though statistics state that more people are now using mobile apps, the question is ‘are they really being used’ for news or is it just for social media such as Instagram or Facebook; as these are the institutions the youth are more likely to tune into on their mobile phones then news apps; this therefore could be applied through Andrew Kean’s theory us ‘being dumbed down.'

In conclusion, both audiences and institutions benefit from the improvements in new and digital media on the news; however they also have their disadvantages. In addition, it is also significant to realise the impact of new and digital media as it has improved so much, therefore more audiences now have access to many institutions and make the most of what’s available to them.

A problem with Skype's status system has been fixed, after many people were unable to use the service. Reports about Skype being unavailable started at about 09:00 BST on Monday in the UK. But just after midnight on Tuesday, Skype said services had been fully restored. In a statement, Skype-owner Microsoft said it had "detected an issue with the status settings" on Skype that show if someone is online or not. The problem locked many people's status as offline - stopping them making calls even though they were connected.

  • Spyware demo shows how spooks hack mobile phones
  • Skype falls victim to text chat bug
  • Free mobile voice, text and data plans coming to UK
  • Court says Skype's name is too similar to Sky's

My view on this article is that the public may have suffered a lot due to the closure of Skype as its shut a popular application that many people around the world use to call from many different locations. it must've been a great let down for the public as well as the company as they may have lost many audiences.

Apple has now removed over 300 pieces of software from the App Store, after malware that targeted developers managed to create infected iOS apps. On top of that, it looks like the apps are more dangerous to Apple customers than previously thought. Several security companies have now banded together in the search for malicious iOS apps: Claud Xiao from PaloAlto Networks has reportedly discovered 39, Fox-IT also found a number of others, a representative told WIRED in an email.
  • Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.
  • the infected apps are also capable of receiving commands from the attacker
  • Originally, the malware was seen to be fairly innocuous: it could siphon off only small snippets of information such as a device’s ID, and the current time.

My view on this article is that this was a major issue due to apple being such a successful brand to a very weak brand due to hackers trying to hack into other peoples privacy. this becomes a big issue as privacy is very important to many audiences and could cause many problems if media is leaked from audiences phones.

The impact of Google

1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?

Goggle has led to the decline of the newspaper industry as the article states that google and other online services are the reason why people don't purchase newspapers or read newspapers as they have taken over the industry.  it states that it has declined in the traditional media industry.

2) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?

i think Google is not to blame for newspapers closing down because as the media is developing there are advanced technology out there for the public which therefore excite them more than the traditional methods of media such as newspapers, also now most of the audience that actually use media is teenagers and younger adults and therefore they are more likely to use online services which leaves the newspapers targeted to an older target audience.

3) Read the comments below the article. Pick one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and justify your opinions in detail.

AGREE

Obviously, Google is not to blame. I don’t think it’s about blame. I think the Internet is incredibly poorly designed. Rather than being free, everything on it should cost something in order to compensate creators. We have a prov gofiting from the content of others is well established. Google came along, and, at least in the case of Youtube, knowingly robbed content creators for years in order to build up the business. The ideal system would be one in which every click resulted in a nano-charge on your phone bill, maybe 1/1000 of a cent for a news story, for example. Sites like Google that link to other sites could also pay in very tiny increments.

I agree with this statement as it states how the technology has developed so much that people are now using the internet so much to do everything on, such as read news, watch online episodes, listen to music and much more. This statement is talking about how sights such as YouTube and Google have become so popular its not their fault its the audience now as well as how they perceive their thoughts/

DISAGREE

what if they didn’t invent the Internet. They did figure out a good way to advertise on other people’s content without sharing anything with the people who did the work. They could have built a system that actually paid the content creators. They could have tossed in a microcent every time someone clicked on a search link. But no, they kept ALL of the money for themselves. And they still do it. They seem to think that Google News is a service. It’s just a leech on the hardworking reporters.

this comment is blaming google for making the reporters lose their jobs as the person is trying to state that google should give some money and fame to the reporters as well, however its not their fault its the way people use media now that has changed not the internet, and if they want to continue running their business and keep the audiences entertained they cant stop anything from happening but doing what they are doing.

Peppa Pig maker Entertainment One explores takeover interest

This article states how  the television company behind Peppa pig has been offered for sale to media companies such as sky and vivendi to be its investors. however sky was not interested in making a bid for entertainment one due to their target as its involved in cinema as well as television and therefore is not seen as a good fit for the satellite operator's strategy.
  • Vivendi was seen as a better match for Entertainment One
  • Sky was not interested in a making a bid for Entertainment One
  • Vivendi is focused on building up its global scale as a media rights owner and distributor
  •  The firm’s stock market valuation has climbed towards £1bn as it has built a large library of film and television rights through acquisitions, and is now focused on expanding its production arm
My view on this article is that Peppa pig is a very popular show for children in terms of their entertainment; they are also becoming very imaginative as there has also been movies based on this kids TV show.
Facebook sets user record as more than 1bn people log on in single day

This article is about how more than 1bn people used Facebook on a Monday, which is a big excitement for them as this is their first time that the social network had hit the milestone. the founder felt very proud about this. this made the founder of Facebook - Mr Zuckerberg the ninth richest person on the planet.

  • In the three months ended June 30, the company's revenues jumped to $4.04bn, from $2.91bn in the same period last year
  • However, net income attributable to stockholders fell to $715m, from $788m, as total costs and expenses jumped 82pc to $2.77bn.
  • It also bought messaging service WhatsApp last year fro $19bn.
  • On Oculus, Mr Zuckerberg said that "immersive 3D content is the obvious next thing" after video, which has recorded huge growth on the website.

My opinion on this article is that I never expected Facebook to still be such a popular website as there has been other social networks that have been more successful such as instagram and snapchat.
