NDM: News values

Galtung and Ruge (1981) defined a set of news values to explain how journalists and editors decided that certain stories and photographs were accepted as newsworthy, while others were not.

Immediacy has it happened recently?

Newspapers now contain more comment or opinion rather than the breaking story.

Familiarity: when people can relate to the news becomes the event is close to them

hen a news is being published which relates to someone due to their area, they would be able to know about this due to social media.

Amplitude: is it a big event or one which involves large numbers of people?

depending on what the situation is and what story it is,

Frequency: does the event happen fairly regularly?

when they see articles or watch news they will get the information they want.

Unambiguity: is it clear and definite?

People want to make sure that they news that they're reading is accurate and usually through citizen journalism videos that are published on-line, do people believe in the news that they see.

Predictability: did we expect it to happen?

This makes everyone want to keep up with the latest technology, makes everyone shocked as they need to make sure that the way that they use this technology works in good ways and helps us.

Surprise: is it a rare or unexpected event?

Due to the immediacy that new and digital media provides, a news with a surprise would be first seen on-line and talked about on social networking sites. Most of the information that we get can be a surprise but if we already know about it or heard about it then it wouldn't be.

Continuity: has this story already been defined as news?

stories that are matching with it and connect with it, so that it builds up.Most  stories would be shown on TV, websites, youtube etc so that people can access it everywhere.
Elite nations and people: which country has the event happened in? Does the story concern well-known people?

Having this lets everyone access any story they want to. In the UK we get stories about america. Having this is good as we get know what happening and how it could effect us if it does.

Negativity: is it bad news?

Nowadays even children know about the bad things happening in the world and people are able to debate on all the negative things on-line. Most stories than show different versions of it and you get to know it.

Balance: the story may be selected to balance other news, such as a human survival story to balance a number of stories concerning death?

gives a balance of the different stories as not all stories can be depressing and sad, they have to have something that changes the topic completely.
